A Look Inside with... The Mac Twins

This months "A look inside" is with the wonderful Mac Twins.  Alana and Lisa Macfarlane are not only the brains (and guts) behind The Gut Stuff but also DJs and Presenters.

They are twin sisters who are empowering people to look after their gut health and if you're not following them already, you can find them here The Gut Stuff The Mac Twins

I met Alana and Lisa and fell in love with them both immediately. It was basically like a great first day, the sparks were flying! They are charismatic, hilarious, interesting and bloody inspiring. And just when I thought I couldn't be anymore obsessed, they answered the questions for this months blog and I just knew we were soul mates. You will LOVE reading what they had to say.

Alana and Lisa recommended a podcast called Grief cast, which I subsequently listened to and loved and they're actually on episode 6 talking about the death of their father. I implore you all to listen to it here, it's moving, funny and brilliant.

1.       What is your morning routine?

Alana is up with the larks and likes to do yoga at 6.30am - however Lisa really struggles, so usually gets up early, but sits in bed for an hour nursing a cup of tea and planning her day.

2.       What helps you stay grounded and centred?

Yin yoga helps to bring us back to ourselves and forces us to STOP, although I think surrounding yourself with friends that aren’t in the same industry as you is really important, as your relationship is in no way related to your work/success.

3.       What podcasts or books do you recommend?

We love the High Low by Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes and also the grief cast is BRILLIANT, for everyone, not just those in grief.

4.       Do you have a life lesson, saying or quote that you love?

“Whats fir ye ill no go by ye” – It’s Scots saying that basically means what’s for you wont go by you and everything is meant to be, so just trust it.

5.       What makes / keeps you happy?

Very simple,Gin and our best pals

6.       How do you deal with disappointment?

We’ve got a little invisible/imaginary friend called “positive polly” and we always ask each other what she might say or how she’d deal with it. But strange really, and its sort of a little joke between us, but it works.

7.       What are you proud of?

Preserving our relationship as sisters, whilst running two businesses - it ain’t easy ha!

8.       What motivates and inspires you?

Each other! And fighting for a cause that is bigger than you.

9.       What qualities do you admire in other people?

Loyalty, loyalty ,loyalty-it’s the Celtic blood in us.

10.   If you’re having a bad day, what do you say or do for yourself?

Bath, glass of wine, write a gratitude list and sleep it off.

11.   What’s your favourite exercise and why?

Alana loves hot yoga she used to have arthritis and it soothes her joints and likes the spiritual aspects, whereas Lisa likes to angrily sweat it out and sing a long in a spin class.

12.   What advice would you give to your early 20s self?

It seems like you’re going a harder route, but trust us it pays off in the end. Keep grafting kid.

13.   What do you deal with overwhelm and stress?

Get a massive sheet of paper, write down everything that needs to be done, prioritise the most important bits with big circles. Have a cup of tea, gift yourself some time and then crack on.

14.   When your negative inner voice of fear and self-doubt kicks in, how do you do to overcome it?

Talk to it as if it’s a person, it seems to work to dissociate yourself from the thoughts and make the positive voice louder.

15.   What is your night-time routine?

We try to use our sunset lamps and read for half an hour as they slowly dim, but we’re usually working late, so collapse into bed. Need to get better at creating work boundaries, so will report back on that one ha!
