3 steps to take when you want to make a change.png

Most of us have an aspect of our lives that we'd like to change but we feel stuck. This is so common and often, the longer we've been wanting to change it, the harder it becomes to make that change. 


Here are my 3 steps to take when you want to make a change in your life: 


1. Write down your goal and have a very clear action plan


Write down where you'd like to be and what you'd like to be doing. If it feels overwhelming to see your goal written down, then break it down. What does 1 week from today look like, one month, one year? 


Plan for what might go wrong and try and think of how you can prevent or solve these issues if and when they arise. 


One of my coaches once told me "If your vision doesn't scare you, it's not big enough"


Challenging yourself is great but it's also really helpful to break it down into manageable portions. 


I have a very clear goal for 5 years time but I also know where I want to be in March, July and next January. If I had to look at my 5 year plan everyday, I'd feel totally overwhelmed and wouldn't know where to begin or what to do each day. 


Go into detail. Journal on what a day in the life of you living this change is. What time do you wake up, how do you feel, what do you do, eat, think about? Where do you work? Where do you live? How do you spend your free time?


Get clear on why you want to make this change. It's so much easier to start to take action when you're clear on your intention and then end result. Being clear on your why is what is going to give you the extra motivation you need. 


2. Let go of how it is supposed to look


This was my biggest learning curve when I left my job. I had an idea of what my life would be like working for myself and I can safely say, it's not what I'd imagined. I've never doubted this move but I've learnt to let go of what I thought it should look like.


Initially, I took extra work to help subsidise my life and this was work I was overly qualified for but it didn't matter. I knew that this was helping me to grow my own business, at my own pace, in my own way and allowing me to create this life I love, so I didn't resent it for a second.


If you'd told me when I left my last job that I'd have to do this, I would have stayed and waited until the point I felt I could make it work without that. What a mistake that would have been.


3. Allow yourself to think, vision and plan from a positive place


So many clients I speak to who feel stuck somewhere wanting to make a change in their lives look ahead and just see obstacles in the road. They're seeing everything that might possibly go wrong, listening to all the negative thoughts in their heads about all the many ways they may be making a mistake or could fail, it's overwhelming and of course no one can see a way to make a real change from here. 


I really encourage my clients to look ahead and see what they want from a positive place. See yourself happily enjoying your decision, it's all going even better than you'd imagined.


It is from this energy, enthusiasm and place of possibility that you'll not only see a way to move forward but actually feel excited about doing so. 


My greatest wish is that you can all find a way to make changes in the areas of your lives that you want to.
